Staunton for Spurs ?

Christian Gross is reportedly set to join the hunt for Aston Villa's Republic of Ireland international Steve Staunton. It is reported that Gross is keen to land the Villa star, who's contract expires in the Summer, in a bid to end his left back problems. The Swiss coach has made a new left back a priority, and Staunton is understood to be his number one target. Sheffield Wednesday boss Ron Atkinson, who signed Staunton from Liverpool when he was in charge of Villa, is also believed to
be interested. Whether this link develops any further will depend a lot on whether or not the 29 year old signs a new deal at Villa Park. As far as that is concerned Villa manager John Gregory is now said to be 75% certain that Steve Staunton will commit himself to Villa Park for a huge chunk of the rest of his career. Gregory is confident that recent talks have gone well and, with the
future looking good at the club, the Republic of Ireland international will decide to stay at Villa when his current contract expires in the summer. We await developments.

Ferdinand's successful return «

Les Ferdinand could be available for Saturday's crunch clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The striker made his comeback from injury, after five weeks out with a back problem, during the reserve game against Oxford on Monday evening. The England striker says that he felt no reaction to the injury that he picked up in the game agains Blackburn Rovers, and he is looking forward to
playing for the second string on Wednesday against Wimbledon at Plough Lane.
He says that if he comes through that Dons game without any problems then he would like to be in
Christian Gross' squad. Ferdinand points out that he is lacking some match
fitness, but that should improve after his outing against Wimbledon. The striker commented: "I feel okay. I didn't get any reaction other than the normal tiredness you'd expect from being out so long.
"If I come through another reserve game then I'd love to be back in contention for Saturday."

Meanwhile, there was further encouraging injury news, that key
players Darren Anderton and Steffen Iversen also came through
the game without any problems and should be fit as well.

Ferdinand fined over ref rap ««

Spurs striker Les Ferdinand has been handed a £2,500 fine following comments he made about referee Gerald Ashby after Spurs were knocked out of the F.A Cup at Barnsley back in
February. The game marked the controversial dismissal of Spurs midfielder Stephen Clemence by Ashby, who dismissed him for two bookable offences, with the second yellow card issued for diving. Ferdinand branded the referee a disgrace, and he said at the time that he was fully expecting the fine that he has now received for his remarks.
